One thing I appreciate tremendously about this film after years of rewatching it is the way Mrs. Doubtfire warms the hearts of the children and mother, successfully making their broken house a home once again. Growing up, I probably watched this movie over a hundred times, and it instilled a deep love for the city of San Francisco in me from a very early age. I can hardly think of a more iconic SF movie than Mrs. Doubtfire, which, fun fact, was shot entirely in the city. Fairmont San Francisco – a 5-star hotel located at the top of Nob Hill, the Fairmont is renowned for luxury, and many of the hotel rooms offer views of Coit Tower and the Golden Gate Bridge. The on-site restaurant is famous; the Tonga Room & Hurricane Bar serves Polynesian food and has live entertainment nightly. The Westin St Francis – conveniently located at Union Square, all rooms have great city views, and there’s a number of on-site dining options as well as a fitness center.

Most of the interior scenes were filmed on location (Douglas noted to look for the pattern in the hardwood floor), but the kitchen was built at a soundstage in the city. It’s interesting to see, next to photos, how closely it was modeled after the actual kitchen.

One of my favorite places to visit in San Francisco is the ‘Mrs Doubtfire House’; I’m a huge fan of the 1993 movie and the late Robin Williams – who plays Mrs Doubtfire in the movie. It looks a little different from the movie, what you’d expect after almost 30 years, but it’s still a must-see for any movie fans.
It’s a popular area for tourists because of its views of the Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge. It’s also home to many restaurants, shops, and bars that are sure to please any palette. The Marina District is a waterfront neighborhood known for its chic shops, restaurants and cafés, and bayfront parks.
